Reading that excites!

Watch our video
Britain is facing a literacy crisis which will leave nearly 1.5 million 11 year olds unable to read properly by 2025, unless action is taken. The Independent, Sunday 7 September 2014

Maneno

Maneno is an ‘edutainment-app’ aimed at children aged from 5 to 10 years old and has been designed to make the process of ‘learning to read’ an engaging and exciting journey for all involved.

The app will encourage your child (or pupil) to read for at least 15 minutes every day - a level proven to increase learning and literacy.

Backed by research and best practice, the application framework is built around four key components for learning and development, these include: Motivation; Comprehension; Aided assistance; Progress & feedback. These core principles are brought to life through audio and visual features, and with social sharing functionality to empower parents, teachers and peers alike to monitor, collaborate with, and motivate your child (or pupil):

Aided Assistance
Chapter 3

What happens when a child comes across a word they do not know? Maneno's reading support technology provides the reader with the opportunity to split up an unknown word in phonetics or syllables - or have it read out loud. Within the app there are a number of features designed to support the child's learning journey and help them to be as independent as they would like, without compromising their learning.

Motivation

Reading takes practice! Research indicates that children should read for at least 15 minutes each day to improve their reading ability. Maneno utilises computer gaming techniques and social media concepts to inspire children to continue reading and to share their experiences with friends and family, for which they receive rewards.

At the heart of the app is the Maneno 'dragon'. Each child has his or her own fire-breathing pet to nurture and develop. As the child progresses, so does the dragon, and a piece of the dragon's special story is unlocked!

Comprehension

The ability to decode letters into words is one thing - understanding the meaning of those words is another. Maneno provides a variety of appealing and age-related comprehension quizzes and tasks tailored to each of the many books in the Maneno library. It also allows parents and teachers to assign customised tasks for each child for each book that they read – almost like homework, just a lot more fun!

Progress and Feedback

Progress is motivational! Maneno has been designed to make learning and progression easy and fun. As a child progresses through their learning journey, the Maneno app gathers statistics and presents these in a simple graphical dashboard that allows the child, and their parent or teacher to easily follow and understand the child’s development, skills level, proficiency, and where there are challenges. In utilising this information, a teacher can create an informed and tailored teaching plan to support the enhanced learning of a child, regardless of what level they are at.
